Members of the Philippine National Police-Anti Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) on Thursday raided an online lending company in Pasig City accused of harassing clients for not paying their debts, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

Lt. Col. Jay Guillermo, ACG public information officer, said with the help of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), they served a warrant to search, seize, and examine computer data at the Super Z main office at the Ortigas Business Center building.

During the operation, cops caught 70 employees making phone calls to clients asking for debt payments.

“Marami kasi tayong natatanggap na reklamo katulad nga ng sinabi niyo na pagka meron biglang mag-message sa iyo na o ikaw ganito, yung utang mo hindi mo pa binayaran tapos minsan tatakutin ka pa. Kung minsan nga yung iba diyan yung contact number nila may names lang na reference, kasama yun sa tinatakot nung mga gumagawa o kaya mga naniningil sa online lending (We receive a lot of complaints just like you said when someone suddenly messages you that you are like this, you haven't paid your debt and sometimes they will threaten you. Sometimes the contact numbers of the others only have names as references, including those who are scared of those who make or charge online lending),” Guillermo said in a radio interview.

He added that some employees allegedly threaten clients that their families will end up dead if they do not pay up while others utter foul words.

The operating team seized electronic devices used by the company, prompting it to cease operations.

The seized devices will be subjected to forensic examination.

“So what we are doing is that we need to conduct forensics so that when we find a violation on their computer. Then, we can say right there, you have a violation. The conduct of digital onsite forensics is ongoing,” Guillermo said in a mix of English and Filipino.
